Friday Post - Late Weight Record

Well, in the end the wreckage wasn't quite as bad as at start of the week although there was a 3.5lb gain! Weight is currently 14st 10lbs which is back to august when I was in Mallorca. Am a little miffed at it as am up to 93miles on the bike and have done 4 sessions in the gym. Did 8mins 19secs on the 2000m row last night so well-pleased with that. Need to get my head right again and the weight should come off.

Hi Paul,

I joined slimming world 5 weeks ago, had good weight loss first 3 weeks (7, 6, 6 lbs/week). Then I joined a gym and have really got into the exercise, at least an hour a day, often more. Since starting gym work, both weeks I have only lost 1 lb, even though I have been following the diet closely. I'm not weight training, mainly cardio / tennis / swimming. The slimming world consultant thinks I should limit my exercise, but to me this seems very odd - what do you think? (btw I'm male, 38yo, starting weight 21 stone)

Hi Joe,
That's an absolutely fantastic start - don't get disheartened you're really doing well. I think you're bound to put on muscle mass if you're doing an hour a day in the gym but if you think about it that's adding a little good weight as well as losing some bad weight. Someone told me the other day through the blog that rather than bmi or weight loss to use waist measurement. In Oct 2006 for example I was wearing some 42" jeans I now wear 34" jeans!! As long as they keep fitting I'll be well-pleased.
The other thing to be aware of is that you have this sort of exponential curve thing happening with your weight loss where at the start you lose loads and then it starts to slow down until a pound a week feels blomming brilliant!! So don't be put off with a pound loss it's really positive stuff and you'll start feeling better from doing the gym work as well.

As to the comment about limiting your exercise this might well be the consultant's concern for your health if you've not been big on exercise. My personal view is that you don't reap the rewards if you don't do both and I know for a fact if I don't watch the diet the exercise on it's own isn't as effective for my weight loss. Slimming world + Exercise = Good Weight Loss + Good Health (at least for me - other diets and exercise plans are available as Russell Brand would say on his Radio 2 show!!).

That's what I think anyway. Keep up the good work Joe, please let me know how you get on (start a blog maybe - they're a brilliant way of putting a little bit of extra pressure on yourself to keep sticking at the plan!!!).

All the best and thanks for getting in touch.

Hi Paul,

thanks for your comments - it is reassuring to know others out there have similar ups and downs during weight loss, and tonight I weighed in with a 7 pound loss (more than making up for the past 2 weeks). So total loss = 26 lbs over 6 weeks. I'm very happy with that, and I am loving getting back into tennis seriously after such a long break.

regards, joe

Hi Joe,

That's a bloomin brilliant weight loss - almost two stone in 6 weeks is brilliant progress. Keep it going and it just keeps getting better - I ran 6.5 miles last night which I reckon is the furthest I've ever run in my life - there's no way I'd have done it a year ago! The only thing you need to be prepared for is the shrinking waistline means spending a chunk of cash on clothes (but even that feels great!!). Take care and keep going!
